Pay and drive city cars used by 2,000

Ireland's only car sharing club, GoCar, has attracted more than 2,000 drivers in its first year.

Motorists pay by the hour to use cars or vans that can be picked up and dropped off at several locations around Dublin and Cork.

Members pay just €4.99 an hour or €2.49 an hour after 8pm as well as 45 cents for each kilometre. And that is inclusive of fuel and insurance costs. There is a €5 monthly administration fee.

To celebrate its first anniversary, GoCar is waiving the €50 sign-up fee for anyone who joins before midnight tonight.

Members have taken almost 15,000 trips using a fleet of more than 70 cars in its first year.

Dublin City Council allows GoCar to operate on-street from their 30,000 pay-and-display parking spaces.

The council's Director of Traffic, Michael Phillips said; "We are very happy with our decision to grant the first on- street car club licence and car club parking permits last year."

Colm Brady, managing director of GoCar Ireland said: "The speed of progress of GoCar has surpassed all our expectations.Car clubs like GoCar have been hugely successful in a host of European and US cities."

It costs €40 for a 24-hour reservation. GoCar can be accessed at www.gocar.ie

Many members were attracted by the chance to remove the stress and costs associated with NCTs, vehicle servicing and insurance premiums.
