Passenger and cabbie accused of assault

A TAXI driver and his passenger have appeared in court charged with assaulting each other.

The passenger is also alleged to have failed to pay his fare while the cabbie is accused of stealing his belongings.

David Sneyd (26) and Joseph Eghene (46) had their cases adjourned at Blanchardstown District Court.

Mr Sneyd, of Doddsboro Cottages, Lucan is charged with failing to pay a €35 taxi fare and assaulting Mr Eghene at Tesco Carpark, Hillcrest, Lucan on April 27 last.

Mr Eghene, of Beechfield Close, Clonee, is charged with stealing a pair of Adidas runners worth €80, a rucksack, wallet and iPhone worth €400 belonging to Mr Sneyd.

He is also accused of assaulting Mr Sneyd in the same incident. The charges are under the Theft and Fraud and Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Acts.

Sgt Mary Doherty told the judge the DPP had directed summary disposal of the case at District Court level.

Sgt Doherty told the court that the defendants were "more than co-accused - they are accusing each other".

Judge David McHugh remanded them on continuing bail to appear in court again in September.
