Outrage over bus routes axe

SEVERAL rural bus services are facing the axe and other routes will become less frequent because of falling passenger numbers.

Critics have warned that scrapping routes will devastate low-income communities and people living in remote areas. Transport chiefs blamed a 10pc fall in demand last year for the cuts, which they plan to impose as soon as possible.

Bus Eireann would not reveal how many of its 330 services around the country would be affected.

US embassy defies threats

The US embassy in Yemen has reopened after a two-day closure sparked by a terrorist threat.

The embassy said successful Yemeni counter-terrorism operations had allowed it to resume operations. Officials said information had pointed to the possibility of terrorist attacks in the capital, Sana'a. The British and French embassies followed suit and several others also limited operations.
