Open verdict returned in engineer's hotel death

AN INQUEST into the death of an Irish aviation engineer who died in a Nigerian hotel room has heard that third party involvement could not be excluded in his hanging.

State pathologist Doctor Marie Cassidy told an inquest that she could not exclude the possibility that a third party was involved in the hanging death of 53-year-old John Falvey.

Dublin County coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty returned an open verdict in the death of Mr Falvey, who previously lived in Thurles, Co Tipperary, but worked as an engineer with Lufthansa Airlines in Lagos and who was found dead in his Lagos hotel room on April 29 last.

The coroner recorded the cause of death as ligature strangulation.
