MORE than one in 10 Irish people thinks we are building a nuclear power station here.
A Eurobarometer survey showed a high level of ignorance on nuclear power.
Some 74pc of respondents did not feel well informed on the issue.
And 13pc of Irish people thought we were building a nuclear power station here.
Only 39pc knew that one third of the electricity produced in the EU was generated in nuclear stations.
Gunther Oettinger, the EU Commissioner responsible for energy, said: "People throughout Europe share the same concerns, whether they have nuclear power plants in their country or not.
"We have to take these concerns seriously and make sure that radioactive waste is disposed of safely, for our people and for our environment."
