Nutritionist Emma gets team ready for victory

THIS is the woman who ensures that the Leinster legends are eating well in the run-up to the vital match in Bordeaux.

Nutritionist Emma McCrudden (above) has drawn up a strict list of foods that are to be avoided by the rugby stars before the big Heineken Cup game.

The rugby stars, who are firm fans of rich foods, have had their diet under close observation before they travel overseas to France.

Emma trained as a dietician in the University of Ulster in Coleraine and then completed a Masters in Sports Nutrition in Loughborough University.

She has been a 'True Blue' member since 2009 when she joined the backroom team working with the senior, academy and sub-academy programmes.

It is her job to ensure that the Leinster team is kept in top physical shape by eating well and looking after their bodies.

She has to remind the senior players of the importance of rehydration and taking enough liquid on board before big tests.

"Hydration testing for each player has to be completed before the game," she said. "Texts are sent so players know what they need to do 24 hours pre-game to optimise hydration."

Every week, she carries out individual player consultations with each of the players and feedback has to be written and emailed to the players. All of the players will have their body composition assessed in order to see how much muscle they may have gained after completing the last training block.
