Niall soars in Twitter charts with 20 million fans

One Direction singer Niall Horan has hit the landmark 20 million mark on Twitter - with as many followers as the population of the entire continent of Australia.

He is officially the 25th most followed person on the planet ahead of superstars like Beyonce, Alicia Keyes and Eminem.

The 21-year-old, who recently celebrated his landmark birthday in Las Vegas, tweeted his delight yesterday at reaching the milestone.

"Oi oi! 20 million followers! Amazing! Thanks everyone! Welcome to my world all the new followers", he posted.

Incredibly the midlands boyband member, who has just finished the Where We Are world tour, has managed to gather the same amount of followers as the entire population of the continent of Australia in just four years.

However, despite his popularity, Niall comes slightly shy of bandmate Harry Styles who has clocked up 22.2 million followers.

The Mullingar singer told his followers yesterday he was heading home to spend time with family and friends but he is already looking forward to going to Australia next year.

"Guys, last show done in Miami! thank you everyone for coming to see us this year! Love you all so much! See ya soon! Rest time now!"

He added that he knows how lucky his band are to be able to play sellout stadiums around the planet.

"Not many artists get to play stadiums, and you guys gave us that chance this year! I love you all!"

Horan is the 25th most popular person on twitter just behind superstar footballer Kaka and Oscar-winning singer Adele, and has almost twice as many followers as Kanye West and X Factor guru, Simon Cowell, who both have over 10 million followers.

Niall has tweeted almost 10,000 times to his 1D fans.

Singer Katy Perry tops the Twitter list with an incredible 58m followers.
