New water firm by 2016

THE new Irish Water company should be up and running by the end of 2016 with more than one million water meters installed.

The decision was taken in April to make the new water company part of Bord Gais because it has the IT systems infrastructure and capabilities to create a nationwide billing system and the experience of operating a national utility.

Group director of corporate affairs at Bord Gais, Larry Donald, said that the company is conscious of the scale of this, but it has been planned in great detail.

Irish Water will employ 1,000 people on the ground to roll out the water meter scheme. The aim is to install 27,000 meters per month starting in July of next year.
