New system to track counterfeit medicines

IRISH engineering consultancy company Horizon Engineering is developing a new global medicine tracking system to help prevent the spread of counterfeit medicines.

An estimated 11m counterfeit medicines are stopped at EU borders annually.

Horizon has just finished successful trialling of serialisation, or 'track and trace', systems in the pharmaceutical sector aimed at showing drugs are not counterfeit.

According to Aiden Corcoran, MD of Horizon, the company has finished trials with three pharmaceutical companies.

"Ireland is one of the world's largest exporters of pharmaceuticals. This industry needs to be protected."
