Mum tried to swallow heroin in garda raid

A MOTHER-of-three who started to retch during a garda raid on her home had tried to swallow a bag of heroin, a court heard.

Jennifer Doyle (30) said she had battled a drug problem since she was 14 years old, and wanted to get clean.

A court heard the defendant went to Italy to get treatment a number of years ago, but her brother took his own life, and she came home for his funeral and never finished the treatment programme.

The defendant admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to possession of heroin as well as having the drug for sale or supply.

Garda Tadhg Reeves said he obtained a search warrant and searched Doyle's home at George's Street Upper on October 19 last year.

As detectives searched the property, Doyle and her partner were brought into the sitting room.

Garda Reeves said the defendant started to retch, and she was searched by a female officer.

The female garda discovered that Doyle had tried to swallow a bag of heroin, with a street value of €453.

Judge Clare Leonard ordered a probation report and adjourned sentencing to December, telling Doyle the court was not "social services" and she needed to address her heroin problem.
