Mum killed and girl (8) injured in horror crash

AN EIGHT-year-old girl is recovering in hospital from injuries she sustained in a car crash that claimed the life of her mother.

Mum-of-three, Suzanne van der Geest (47) was killed in a car accident at Ballydowney on the outskirts of Killarney.

She was originally from The Netherlands and was living in Killorglin, Co Kerry with her Irish husband and family.

Mrs van der Geest's grey Ford Fiesta was travelling towards Killarney when she lost control of the car, which hit a tree and ended up in woodland in Killarney National Park.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her remains were taken to Kerry General Hospital (KGH) for a postmortem examination.

Her daughter's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

She was also taken to KGH for treatment.

The dead woman's husband Donal was at home at the time, minding their other two children, when the accident happened at around 12.20pm.

It is understood his wife had been taking their daughter to an appointment in Cork when the accident happened.

His mother had recently passed away.

The road remained closed for several hours yesterday afternoon while gardai carried out a forensic examination at the scene.

This is not the first fatal accident to have happened at that location near Gortroe in Fossa, which is within the 50kph speed limit zone of the town.

A man lost his life in a road accident at the same location about six years ago.

Gardai in Killarney are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have travelled on the Killarney to Killorglin Road between noon and 1pm to contact them.
