Mum fined for stealing food for her family

A MOTHER of four has been fined for shoplifting food for her family at a Dublin supermarket.

Elaine Byrne (45) was convicted of stealing less than €7 worth of beef and chicken.

Judge David McHugh fined her €20 at Blanchardstown District Court.

Byrne, of St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to stealing a packet of minced beef and a packet of chicken worth a total of €6.88 at Aldi, Newlands Cross, last August 27.

The defendant had no previous convictions but had benefited from the adult caution scheme previously.

Her lawyer said it had been the day before Byrne's social welfare payment and she had no money for food.

Judge McHugh said it was a crime notwithstanding the low value of the goods taken.
