Mum avoids jail over heroin

A MEATH mother of one who washed 100 grammes of heroin down a sink when being interviewed by custom officers has avoided a jail term.

Annabelle Thompson (31) had just come from Amsterdam and had her 10-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy, with her.

The court heard that another man donated her fare to Amsterdam on the basis that she was getting specialist care for her son.

Thompson, of Tailleann Crescent, Navan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the drugs for sale or supply at the airport on February 21, 2011.

She was sentenced to a four-year suspended sentence.

Judge Martin Nolan accepted that Thompson had run up a drug debt and had agreed to collect drugs from Amsterdam in order to pay it off.
