Mum and daughter (2) killed in Polish crash

The family of an Irish woman, killed in Poland along with her young daughter, say they have been left "shattered" by their deaths.

Well-known Co Limerick horse trainer John Long's daughter Yvonne (30) and his granddaughter Ella (2) were killed instantly when a car collided with their vehicle near Krakow yesterday.

Ms Long's husband, Soren, a pilot from Denmark, and their other daughter, aged six months, who were also in the car at the time of the collision, are being treated for non-life- threatening injuries.

Ms Long's uncle, Ronnie Long, a former president of Athletics Ireland, said the family's car was stationary when it was struck by another vehicle at around lunchtime yesterday.

"It's emerged they were parked when they were hit. They had been at a wedding earlier and were going back home to Norway. Ella would have been three in August," Mr Long said.

He described Yvonne, originally from Kilcornan, West Limerick, as "a most beautiful looking girl".

"She was an artist, and colour was her major thing. She had attended Edinburgh University. Her husband is a Danish pilot but they are living in Norway."
