The Houston Fire Department said 14 firefighters were taken to hospital on Friday.

One remained in critical condition and another was undergoing surgery.

TRUCK DRIVERS KILLED IN IRAQ

GUNMEN in Iraq killed three Syrian truck drivers yesterday morning on a main highway linking Baghdad to Syria and Jordan.

Police said the gunmen stopped the trucks near the remote town of Rutba, then killed the drivers and burned their vehicles.

Iraqi security forces are struggling to contain the country's most relentless round of violence, fuelled by rising sectarian divisions.

CHILLING LOT ON EBAY SALE SITE

NEW York's Office of General Services has turned to eBay in an attempt to sell off a huge, steel morgue refrigerator at a psychiatric hospital.

Bidders are vying for the four-drawer unit, but that price does not include delivery. Buyers have to be willing to remove the fridge themselves from the Manhattan Psychiatric Centre.

Office of General Services spokeswoman Heather Groll does the agency does get unusual surplus items to sell from time to time, including barbers' chairs from prisons and police cars.

NAME CORRECT AFTER 97 YEARS

THE spelling of a First World War soldier's name has been corrected on an English village memorial, 97 years after he died.

Earlier this year, parish councillors in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire, UK, agreed to have the spelling of Private George Samuel's name changed from "Samuels" to "Samuel" following a plea from a relative.

Alison Corfield said the mis-spelling of her great uncle's name had caused "great distress" to his parents after the 1914-18 war.
