Mortgage crisis alert

A FAILURE to deal with unaffordable mortgage debt in a "careful and measured" manner could result in Ireland's banks needing a further bailout, a senior regulator has warned.

Fiona Muldoon, of the Central Bank, said banks may need further capital if they continue "to do nothing" to tackle the mortgage crisis. The stark statement comes amid growing speculation that banks may require further support.
