Mondello's 45th bash

IRELAND'S racing circuit Mondello Park is marking its 45th anniversary next month.

Mondello in Kildare opened in 1968 and within a year grew to the extended 2km National Circuit.

In 1985, the circuit was purchased by Martin Birrane and has gradually evolved into the venue it is today.

The June 8/9 meeting will run as the 'Mondello 45' and the Birrane Trophy will be presented to the class which has the biggest grid of the meeting.

John Keaney famously won the first ever race at the Kildare venue in a Mini Cooper S back in May 1968 and he will lead a parade of Minis around the circuit at lunchtime on race day.
