A 'FAT' Freddie Thompson gang member is suspected of beating a rival mobster's mother with a wheel brace in a pub.
The innocent mum of a top King Ratt lieutenant was attacked in a Dublin pub last Sunday night.
A major investigation has been launched after the brutal attack on Linda McNally in a packed bar in Francis Street.
The savage attack on the mother of senior gang member Wayne McNally (26) is believed to have been carried by members of the rival 'Fat' Freddie Thompson gang.
Ms McNally -- who is not involved in crime -- was set upon by a balaclava-wearing thug as she sat having a drink late on Sunday night.
A source said: "It is a miracle that Linda McNally did not suffer more serious injuries in the incident.
"Gardai are reviewing CCTV."
The Herald has learnt that the chief suspect for the assault is a very close associate of gang boss Thompson and it is understood that this man and a number of other Thompson allies had been drinking in the pub hours before the assault.
However they had all left shortly before a man wearing a balaclava rushed in and attacked Ms McNally with a wheel brace.
The incident is being described as a major escalation in the Crumlin/Drimnagh feud.
"Things are really getting out of hand around here -- this assault happened just 36 hours after feud-related pipe bomb attack where an innocent family were targeted," a source said.
"If things continue like they are someone is going to get murdered."
At the centre of this new round of blood-letting is the fact that Thompson has returned to live in his south inner city family home after it was targeted in a petrol bomb attack a fortnight ago.
Wayne McNally, the son of Sunday night's attack victim, is a bitter rival of the Thompson faction and sources said that the assault on his innocent mum "will drive him nuts."
McNally -- who has over 50 previous convictions -- is currently serving a 13 year jail sentence in high security Portlaoise Prison with his close pal, convicted killer Brian Rattigan.
McNally, who originally comes from Ross Road, Christchurch, was given the 13 year sentence in October, 2009, for shooting a bouncer in the face after he was refused entry into Hush Nightclub in the Red Cow Inn in February, 2008.
He then escaped in a stolen car and was later chased by two gardai, who spotted him while on patrol in Dolphin's Barn.
McNally had previously been jailed for three years for cutting a woman's throat and stealing her car in 2003.
A heavy drug user, he also survived an assassination attempt in February 2007.
