Miracle escape as garda vehicles collide

THIS WAS the scene after an Armed Support Unit vehicle and garda van collided.

The vehicles collided in Cork early yesterday as they responded to an emergency call.

Four gardai had "a miraculous" escape in the crash in which both vehicles were virtually written off.

The collision -- which occurred on the Boreenmanna Road in Cork at 1.30am -- is now the focus of a Garda Ombudsman probe.

The Herald understands that both vehicles will also be subjected to a detailed mechanical inspection over the coming days.

Both patrol vehicles were responding to a call-out when the collision occurred on a busy stretch of road near Cork's South Link Road.

The four gardai were treated in hospital for shock and severe bruising.
