JUNIOR finance minister Simon Harris was among scores of swimmers who braved the cold winter sea yesterday in aid of charity.

Mr Harris took the plunge at the annual new year swim in Bray, Co Wicklow.

At midday, the swimmers ran from the beach at the seaside town into the Irish Sea.

It was the 31st year that the swim has taken place and this year more than 100 people took part.

"Cold but exhilarated - great way to start the new year," said Mr Harris, who took to Twitter to post a picture following his dip.

The event is organised by the Bray Lions Club and money raised by the swimmers goes to local charities.

Set up 31 years ago for the dual purposes of festive fun and raising charity funds, the annual event has to date raised €304,804, including €10,320 in 2014.

Many of the swimmers turn out each year to face the cold waters in fancy dress.

Five local charities will benefit from the funds raised this year including the Bray poor relief fund.

Elsewhere, Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin also took to the sea. He was among the swimmers at the annual RNLI New Year's Day swim at Courtmacsherry, Bandon, Co Cork.
