A PARKED bike proved to be the biggest headache for the US Secret Service when Michelle Obama and her daughters dined in Dalkey with Bono.

The bike, propped casually against the wall of Finnegan's pub in the Dublin village, was the primary concern for stern-faced officials as they combed the area for suspicious devices before the Obamas arrived.

A well-placed source said at least half-a-dozen agents, including one with a sniffer dog, surrounded the bicycle for 45 minutes last Tuesday morning before gardai told them it had been left there by a local man.

"The Obamas have a huge security operation in place wherever they go, but there really wasn't much for them to do in Dalkey last week.

"The biggest worry they had all day was when they spotted a bike parked outside Finnegan's. There were discussions going on between about six secret service agents for 45 minutes about how the bike had got there and who it belonged to.

"There was a huge amount of fuss and no doubt there was some concern that there might have been a suspicious device hidden on it.

"But eventually a garda informed them it belonged to a local man. The gardai got him to move it."

The source added: "It was a brilliant day and Mrs Obama and her daughters were given a huge cheer when they arrived in Dalkey.

"But watching all the Secret Service agents fret about a harmless bicycle was a memorable sideshow."
