McDaid insists FF not to blame over Sargent leak

Fianna Fail was not responsible for the leak that led to Trevor Sargent's resignation, a rebel TD has said.

Donegal TD Dr Jim McDaid said if a member of Fianna Fail revealed the story, it was suicidal for the Government.

He said, however that the Government won't last another year.

"It would be absolutely crazy that any Government minister would try to snitch or do a Mossad-type assassination on Trevor Sargent because it was certainly not in the coalition's interest. And secondly, there may be other people in Fianna Fail's sights but Trevor Sargent wouldn't be one of them," Dr McDaid.

"But nonetheless, they have damaged the trust in there and there are factions within the Green Party. But I also think this Trevor Sargent thing will do them more good than harm."

He predicted on Newtalk's Lunchtime With Eamon Keane show that the Government would collapse this year.

Dr McDaid was speaking in light of the resignations of both Mr Sargent and Willie O'Dea.

He expects the Greens to push through a number of items and then pull the plug.

"My honest opinion of this is that I do think there are some pieces of legislation the Green Party want to get through and I do think they'll get them through in the next two to three months," he said.
