McCarthy tipped to take over from Trap

A REPLACEMENT for Giovanni Trapattoni could be lined up by the end of the month, as the Italian is almost certain to face the boot after Ireland's World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands tonight.

Bookmakers have suspended betting on his contract being terminated in the coming weeks.

And with the Republic due to take on Greece in a friendly on November 14, the FAI are expected to move quickly to find a replacement.

Mick McCarthy, who brought Robbie Keane and Co to the World Cup in 2002, has become the surprise favourite for the job. His old foe Roy Keane is seen as an outsider. Others said to be in the mix are Norwich manager Chris Hughton and Sunderland's Martin O'Neill.
