THE Mayor of Melbourne is to travel to Drogheda to sympathise with the family of murdered Jill Meagher.

Oscar Yildiz will visit the Irishwoman's hometown next month and meet her relatives.

It is expected that he will be warmly received in the town that was left reeling after Jill's rape and murder last year.

The tragic woman's aunt Catherine McKeon Halpin said that Mr Yildiz would "get a warm welcome".

"He wishes to express the regret of the people in Melbourne and it really is lovely that he is coming over," she said.
