DUBLIN city councillor Mary Fitzpatrick has been chosen by her Fianna Fail colleagues to represent the party in the European elections this summer.

The 45-year-old mother of three (inset) from north Dublin beat Tiernan Brady, director of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network who received 208 votes, and former Senator Geraldine Feeney who got 140.

But 362 of the 700 party faithful attending yesterday's selection convention voted for the Dublin Central representative.

To applause from delegates, Ms Fitzpatrick – who describes herself as a political centrist – said that being chosen yesterday to represent Dublin in the European elections in May was "one of my happiest days in the party".
