Manholes sealed in security blitz

Army engineers have begun welding down manhole

covers along the routes to be taken by Queen Elizabeth as part of a massive security operation.

Crews were spotted by the Herald along the N7 welding the covers shut to ensure nobody could access them or conceal weapons or explosives under them.

The route is close to the Casement Aerodrome at Baldonnel where the queen will arrive on May 17, and along the road to the National Stud, where she will visit on May 19.

It is a routine security procedure to lock any services that terrorists could use to launch an attack on visiting heads of state.
