A MAN was last night killed while walking down a busy motorway.
The 37-year-old was struck by a car after apparently getting out of his own vehicle on a part of the M1.
Accident investigators closed part of the northbound side near Castlebellingham, Co Louth, at around 8.50pm after an ambulance and two paramedic teams rushed to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where a post-mortem examination was due to take place this afternoon.
The driver of the car that struck the man is understood was not seriously injured.

'Child-snatch' 10 back in jail
Ten US missionaries on child kidnapping charges have returned to jail after failing to persuade a Haitian judge to free them.
The 10 Americans were led, one by one into the back of a police van after spending half the day at a court in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince.
A judge has set three more days of hearings next week.
A defence lawyer said nine of the Americans -- all but the group's leader, Laura Silsby -- did not know they lacked the proper papers to remove 33 children from Haiti.
