A YOUNG man is critically ill in hospital after he was slashed across the stomach with a samurai sword.
The attack took place at a house party in the Daletree estate in Firhouse, south county Dublin, yesterday.
The emergency services were alerted and when local gardai and fire brigade personnel arrived at the scene they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with a gaping wound in his stomach.
The 21-year-old man had lost a lot of blood and was rushed by ambulance to St James' hospital where his condition was described as critical.
He later underwent emergency surgery there.
Gardai believe the incident arose from a row between two partygoers.
Officers suspect a large group had earlier attended a party in a Tallaght hotel and some of them then went to the house in Daletree. One of those involved in the row produced a samurai sword and stabbed his victim.
Gardai later arrested a 21-year-old suspect at the scene and he was taken to Tallaght station for questioning.
He was detained and can be held without charge for up to 24 hours.
During a search, gardai recovered a samurai sword, which they believe was used in the vicious attack.
