Man sentenced for stolen bike

A DUBLIN man has been given a three-year suspended sentence for possession of a stolen motorbike in the city.

Richard Cummins (27), of Alexander Place, East Road, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the Yamaha motorbike on May 29, 2009.

Detective Garda Gareth Kane told Ms Fiona McGowan, prosecuting, that two men with a Mercedes van were observed at the underground car park at the Alexander Place Apartments where a blue Yamaha motorbike had a damaged ignition. Gardai later discovered it had been stolen.

The judge noted that he brought a sum of €1,000 to court, €500 for the owner of the bike and €500 to go to charity.

Wife backed for killing husband

An Australian woman who burned her husband to death was given a suspended sentence for manslaughter, after a judge determined she had snapped following decades of spousal abuse.

Rajini Narayan (46) set fire to her husband, Satish Narayan, on December 8, 2008, after discovering he'd had an affair. South Australian Supreme Court Justice John Sulan said the woman's distress had been compounded by years of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her husband. Sulan sentenced Narayan to six years in jail, then suspended it, saying she had already suffered enough.
