Man on fake gun charge

A YOUNG man has denied he had an imitation firearm hidden in the waistband of his tracksuit bottoms after he was stopped and searched by gardai.

Wayne Teeling (21) is alleged to have claimed to gardai he was transporting the fake handgun as he owed money to another individual.

A court heard gardai originally thought the gun was real and it was only when it was analysed that it was discovered to be a fake. Teeling has denied the charge.

Judge David McHugh adjourned the case until April.

Teeling, of Cappagh Avenue, Finglas West, is charged with possession of a realistic imitation firearm without a reasonable excuse.

It is claimed Teeling was in the back of a taxi that was stopped by gardai on Tolka Valley Road on June 27, 2011.

There are up to 17 garda witnesses in the case.
