Man found dead after he drives off pier into sea

HORRIFIED witnesses watched as a man drove a car off a pier in Howth.

The car plunged into the water at 10.30am yesterday and quickly disappeared under the water. Emergency services rushed to the scene and two garda divers took the man out of the car and brought him to the surface.

Both Howth RNLI inshore lifeboat personnel and Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but he was dead at the scene.

Several people who were on the busy Co Dublin pier alerted the emergency services. They reported the car had plunged off the west pier.

The submerged car was not visible from the pier and it was located after the two members of the Garda sub-aqua unit entered the water.

A spokesman for Howth Coast Guard said it was a sad outcome to what had been a very quick response from all the emergency and rescue agencies. Gardai today described the incident as "a tragedy."
