Man fights for life after attack

A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital following an assault.

Gardai in Galway are today looking for the weapon used to assault a Polish man in Athenry last night.

The incident happened at the Cullairbaun Estate at 11.30pm after a row broke out between a number of men on a green in the estate.

As a result, a 41-year-old Polish man, who has been living in Athenry, received serious head injuries and is currently in a critical condition.

Gardai are attempting to establish what type of weapon he was struck with and are searching for that weapon.

DUFFY RELEASED FROM CUSTODY

PROMINENT republican Colin Duffy has been released from police custody in the North.

The 45-year-old from Lurgan, Co Armagh, was being questioned by detectives investigating dissident republican activity.

He was detained yesterday morning and was taken to the PSNI's serious crime suite in Antrim.

A police spokesman said he had been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

INVESTOR FOUND FOR FOLEY'S BAR

AN investor has been secured for Foley's bar and restaurant and the adjoining O'Reilly's bar on Dublin's Merrion Row, the High Court has heard.

The business employs about 20 people.

An examiner was appointed last April to the two firms behind the business. Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan granted his application to extend court protection for another 18 days.

The companies are The Belohn Ltd, the operating company, and Merrow Ltd, the holding company.

AD IN FRENCH ON CHANNEL 4

CHANNEL 4 is to break new ground by screening an entire ad break in French.

Most of the commercials will be for French brands – such as L'Oreal, Renault and Boursin cheese – and will feature subtitles.

The station has booked the Gallic adverts to mark the launch of a French zombie drama series, The Returned, which begins on June 9.
