Man dies in mystery car fire on motorway

GARDAI are investigating the death of a man, believed to be in his early 50s, who was found in a burnt-out car on the M4 near Kinnegad, Co Westmeath.

The car, believed to be an Opel Zafira, caught fire yesterday on the eastbound lane on the M4 at around 4pm.

Investigating officers are appealing to motorists to contact the gardai at Mullingar 044-9384000, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any garda station.

The matter is not being treated as suspicious.

Meanwhile, two people died after separate collisions yesterday, while a 26-year-old man drowned while swimming in lake Knocknagarton near Virginia, Co Cavan last night.

Friends brought him ashore, and he was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gardai say that the man's family have been notified, but he has not yet been named.

A post mortem examination will be carried out today.

Meanwhile, two men have died in road crashes in counties Kilkenny and Donegal.

A motorcyclist in his early 40s died in a collision with a lorry on the N25 Waterford to New Ross road in Kilkenny.

A man in his 20s died following a two-car crash just outside Ballybofey in Co Donegal.

The crash happened on the Ballybofey to Glenfin road between 3am and 3.30am.

Two other men and a woman travelling with the victim were injured and taken to hospital.

A woman driving the second car was also taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
