Man dies after lake trips ends in tragedy

ONE of the anglers rescued from Lough Ree after poor weather turned a fishing trip into a disaster, has died in hospital.

The man, aged in his 20s, was taken to University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) after he was pulled from the water yesterday. He died last night.

Another man remains missing following the incident, near Athlone, while a third remains in hospital.

Search teams again set out this morning to try and locate the missing man.

The three were part of a group of six from an angling club in Armagh.

They had left from Hodson Bay in Athlone, Co Westmeath, on an angling trip yesterday afternoon.

The group had informed locals of their plans to camp overnight on the lakeshore at Carna, a few kilometres from Hodson Bay.

A local man who met them on their way out said he advised them of the poor conditions.

Richie O'Hara of Baysports said: "Two of the party came into our centre at about 4.30pm and they were quite concerned about three of their party who they were meant to meet."

The alarm was raised by a local man when he saw the group set off in a 15 foot boat.

Conditions on the Lough were described as gusty with a force five to six wind.

An extensive search by the Air Corps and the RNLI could not locate the third man, but resumed the search today.
