A faltering world-record bid to open the most number of bras in a minute has been rescued – by a stampede of enthusiastic male volunteers.

Sean Murray, from Skibbereen, Co Cork, will attempt to break a world record later today by unclasping at least 70 bras in just 60 seconds.

But the lingerie shop owner's enthusiasm for his racy record bid has not been shared by many of the west Cork town's females. Up to last week just 30 lasses had put themselves forward for the event, leaving him way short on the numbers required to break the current Dutch-held record of 69 unhooked bras in a minute.

However, to spare participants' blushes, Sean has allowed female volunteers to wear open-backed T-shirts, so they can keep their breasts hidden.

His most successful manoeuvre, which was given the green light by Guinness record chiefs, was to open the event to males. Sean said yesterday: "About a third of the volunteers are men. There's around 50 people in total who have signed up, but I think there'll be a few more on the day.

"But if we don't get enough then I've been told I can go back to one of the volunteers and undo his or her bra again."

Guinness chiefs have demanded to see video evidence of the record bid – funds from which will go to fighting breast cancer. But Sean, who's been perfecting his technique on his store's mannequins, said he's every confidence he'll be successful.
