The long-awaited Casino Fry Model Railway Museum in Malahide is due to be completed by early 2017.
The collection of model railways, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, will be housed in the Casino House thatched cottage.
Fingal County Council have confirmed that initial works are already underway and construction works are due to begin in July 2016, in a response to a question from Fine Gael councillor Anthony Lavin.
The restoration works on the Casino building will include a re-thatching of the roof and may require an extension to the existing structure, in order to allow for the creation of a larger exhibition area for the Fry Model Collection, and the installation of public toilets for visitors.
The impressive collection, which includes a model of every train that ever ran on the railways of Ireland, was previously housed in Malahide Castle until 2010.
Farmer Michael Gaffney left €1.5m in his will for the restoration of Casino House on the condition that the Fry collection was retained in north Dublin.
