THEY became close friends as two of Fine Gael's rising stars.

Lucinda Creighton and Nicky McFadden had much in common.

But Ms Creighton, like so many of her Dail colleagues, was left heartbroken by the news last week that her close friend had lost her battle with motor neuron disease.

In what is a poignant gesture, the former European Affairs Minister, who left Fine Gael last year, has given her newborn daughter the middle name Nicola.

Sources close to Ms Creighton confirmed last night that she and her husband, Senator Paul Bradford, made the decision in tribute to the late Longford/ Westmeath TD.

"Nicky was very close to both Lucinda and Paul so they decided to name their daughter Gwendolyn Nicola in memory of her," said a well-placed source.

Criticise

Ms Creighton and Mr Bradford spent Mother's Day in hospital and are preparing to bring their baby home for the first time this week.

Both mother and child are said to be doing well and are in good health.

Ms Creighton has even found time to take to Twitter to criticise the Government over its handling of the recent garda scandals.

"One thing for sure, this isn't the democratic revolution people voted for in 2011. Seems more and more like the chaos of the last government. Not good enough," she tweeted.

The Dublin South East TD will this week leave Holles Street hospital and return home with her daughter.

The couple opted for the unusual first name Gwendolyn as it was one they both liked. Gwendolyn is of Welsh origin and means 'fair bow' or 'blessed ring'.
