Perhaps he was giddy after his secret nuptials, but newly-wed Gabriel Byrne ended up leaving his mobile phone behind in a coffee shop.

The ice-cool actor (64) must have been more than a little flustered after realising he left the phone in a restaurant in Cork city.

The Usual Suspects actor popped in for some breakfast in Fenn's Quay along with his bride Hannah Beth King a few days before they got hitched at Ballymaloe House last Monday.

But the restaurant was forced to turn to Twitter after realising the award-winning actor had left something very important behind.

"Anyone spots Gabriel Byrne in town, he left something behind him here at Fenn's Quay, can you tell him please," the tweet read.

Quickly realising his mistake, Gabriel dispatched his other half to collect his precious phone from the Sheares Street establishment.

The star made headlines internationally this week after his surprise wedding at the venue made famous by celebrity chef Darina Allen.

They had a "small and intimate" ceremony at Ballymaloe House before spending a few days honeymooning in East Cork.

The happy couple were joined by just a few close family members and friends at the celebration, which they managed to keep under wraps until Gabriel's friend, councillor Mannix Flynn let the news slip on RTE Radio.

Florida-born Hannah Beth works as a TV producer and has made shows for networks including Discovery and PBS. The pair have been dating for years.

In an interview in 2012, Golden Globe winner Gabriel revealed he was in a "committed relationship", describing his partner as "lovely, intelligent and beautiful, absolutely beautiful".

The New York-based actor was previously married to actress Ellen Barkin, with whom he has two children, Romy and Jack.

Mr Flynn said he had met Gabriel's new wife several times, and he knew they were going to get married.
