Locker room thief is jailed for 3 years

A burglar who targeted staff locker rooms in a gym, a hotel, a shop and a restaurant has been jailed for three years.

Jason Whelan (24), of Woodhazel Terrace, Ballymun, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to five counts of burglary, theft and criminal damage on dates between August 18 and October 1, 2012.

Whelan stole personal belongings from the staff locker rooms at the Swan Leisure Centre in Rathmines and at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown Shopping Centre and Maximilian's Bistro.

He broke into six lockers in the male staff room of the Swan Centre, taking items worth €5,867. These included a laptop, a new Trek bike worth €1,000, iPods, iPads, a Kindle Touch, several smartphones and cash.

He had been on High Court bail at the time for four other offences.

They included the burglary on August 18, 2012 of a guest room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where Whelan stole a purse, handbag, hair straighteners and a camera. Whelan has 71 previous convictions.

Sandra Frayne BL, defending, said Whelan had a tragic background and both his parents were heroin addicts.

The court heard he began taking drugs when he was 13 and has since been in "most of the prisons in the State".

Judge Mary Ellen Ring said that the Probation Services put Whelan at a high risk of reoffending.
