Left-wing TDs back poll-topper for the Dail

Two of the Dail's most prominent left-wing TDs have thrown their support behind an independent candidate in Dublin Central ahead of the general election.

Dublin City councillor Cieran Perry told the Herald he intended to focus his campaign on areas such as housing, education and health.

Perry - a leading anti-water charge campaigner - has secured the backing of left-wing TDs Paul Murphy and Joan Collins. He topped the poll in the Cabra-Finglas ward in the local elections.

"Following on from Fianna Fail's disastrous government, people were promised change by Fine Gael and Labour. They were lied to," Mr Perry said.

"Despite Fine Gael and Labour's attempts at spin, the majority of people are still struggling to pay their bills while our health, education and public services have continued to decline."

The sitting TDs in Dublin Central are Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe, Labour's Joe Costello, Sinn Fein deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald and Independent Maureen O'Sullivan.

Fianna Fail has yet to select a candidate for the general election.
