LA police chief in cancer fight

Daryl Gates, Los Angeles' controversial ex-police chief who said drug users should be shot and whose career ended after the Rodney King beating, is seriously ill, reportedly suffering from cancer.

Current police chief Charlie Beck said Mr Gates (83) who headed the LA Police Department from 1978 to 1992 during some of its most tumultuous years, had a "very serious malady".

Mr Gates, well-liked by rank-and-file officers, is said to have been in hospital for three weeks with bladder cancer that had spread to his bones.

Weatherman crosses pelican

An Australian weatherman has found himself the butt of his colleagues' jokes after a pelican repeatedly bit his backside during a live broadcast.

Steve Jacobs of Channel 9's Today Show was forecasting from Sydney's Taronga Zoo when one of the birds lunged at him.

A zoo worker had to pull the bird away from the presenter, who was screaming and laughing, but unhurt. The video has become a YouTube hit.
