BUSINESSMAN Bobby Kerr is to offering his know-how to An Post in order to secure a future for the country's post offices.

The former Dragon's Den investor will take up the position of independent chairman of the new Post Office Network Business Development Group.

The group will begin work in the New Year and the businessman and broadcaster is looking forward to the challenge.

"It's safe to say I know what the challenge is here," he told the Herald. "I hope I have a vision of what it will be but times are a-changing, as they say."

The purpose of the new board will be to explore potential avenues for commercial and government business in the post office network.

The coffee entrepreneur believes that post offices are "one of the last bastions of rural Ireland" and need to be safeguarded.

"I'm interested in anything that is a commercial business and the product probably needs to change," he said.

"But post offices are essential to the community too and I'm interested in that balance."

Though he has yet to begin work on examining the model in place at present he said he is confident that there are opportunities for growth in the postal sector.

"There is massive opportunities in parcel delivery with online businesses," he pointed out.

Mr Kerr will begin his work after Christmas.

"We will start to look under the bonnet in January and see what's involved and then go to the minister with our recommendations".

"I'm really honoured to be asked to do this because I think there is a big task here," he said.

"We're going to be looking at the model that is the future post office - what it's going to look like, what it's going to sell, how it's going to work commercially," he added.
