Keeping tags on prisoners

THE ELECTRONIC tagging of prisoners requiring hospital care appears a common-sense move. Hundreds of thousands of euro will be saved in security bills annually as the system is rolled out for suitable inmates.

The merits or otherwise of widescale electronic tagging for convicts remain to be debated.

But electronic tagging of prisoners in hospitals -- most of whom are on short stays -- seems reasonable.
