SEAN Kavanagh was delighted to receive a Lord Mayor of Dublin Award on behalf of the Homeless Street Leagues.
Speaking at the annual Lord Mayor Awards, which were hosted in the Mansion House, Kavanagh said he was "incredibly honoured and humbled to receive a Lord Mayor of Dublin Award."
Homeless Street Soccer League's Sean Kavanagh, manager and editor of Ireland's Big Issues Magazine, started the Dublin Street Leagues in 2004, having brought a team of homeless lads to the Homeless Soccer World Cup in Austria the previous year.
After witnessing the benefits of participation in sport, he decided that instead of creating a team for a one-off annual tournament, it would be more beneficial for disadvantaged lads to participate in sport all year round.
After discussions with FAI CEO John Delaney in 2005, the Homeless Street League became affiliated with the FAI and their 'Football For All' programme.
At present there are 13 leagues established all over the country. A team selected from the Leagues will represent Ireland in the Homeless World Cup in Poznan, Poland in August 2013.
Sean's next big challenge is to get sponsorship to bring the team to participate in the Homeless World Cup in Poznan, Poland in August 2013.
