Judge quashes '08 Paddy's Day conviction

A DUBLIN man who was jailed for 12 months for violent disorder on St Patrick's Day four years ago has had his conviction overturned on appeal.

The Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the conviction of Stephen McArdle (21), with a last address at Prospect Avenue, Glasnevin, who had pleaded not guilty to violent disorder in Finglas in 2008.

Counsel for the applicant, Mr Padraig Dwyer, told the court that Judge Patrick McCartan erred in principle by deciding to proceed with the trial when McArdle was absent from court.
