Jobless toll 'disgrace'

BUSINESS lobby group ISME says Ireland's long-term unemployment situation remains a "disgrace".

ISME called for a more proactive approach by the Government to tackle the crisis, which has seen "our youth leave in droves to find work elsewhere".

The latest standardised unemployment rate from the CSO shows an unchanged 14pc.

The seasonally adjusted live register figures confirm that 426,900 people are claiming assistance, only 100 fewer than in March.

The number of long-term claimants has increased to 44.6pc of the total, up over 2,000 in the year.
