Japanese plug nuclear leaks

The utility that owns the crippled Japanese nuclear reactor said highly radioactive water has stopped leaking into the ocean.

Tokyo Electric Power Co said the company's attempt to stem the leak by injecting 1,500 litres of "water glass", or sodium silicate, and another agent near a seaside pit where the water was leaking appeared to have been successful.

Radiation of more than 7.5 million times the legal limit for seawater was found just off the plant.

Everest gets big clean-up

A team led by a veteran Sherpa guide has flown to Mount Everest to clear away tonnes of rubbish left on the world's highest peak.

The expedition team plans to bring down the refuse from the slopes of Everest during the spring climbing season.

The team's leader, Apa, has climbed Everest a record 20 times. Apa's team hopes to bring down 8,800lb of rubbish.

NY bid to sell Sing Sing jail

New York politicians are urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to close the historic Sing Sing prison to save money.

Now a maximum security facility housing about 1,700 inmates, Sing Sing opened in 1826 about 30 miles north of New York City. However officials now want it sold to raise revenue.
