Jail is only solution to thieving, says judge

A JUDGE has said that prison sentences are the only effective way of dealing with "serial thieves".

Judge David McHugh was commenting in the case of a repeat offender who was caught stealing shoes in a west-Dublin clothes shop.

Mariana Kovacs (29) admitted her part in the theft, which was carried out by a group of four people.

Judge McHugh jailed her for a month at Blanchardstown District Court.

Kovacs, with an address at Montpelier View, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to stealing shoes worth €116 at TK Maxx on April 25 last.

The accused's lawyer explained that Kovacs had been one of four people involved.

The goods taken were pairs of shoes and were "not luxury items", her solicitor said.

Kovacs accepted, however, that she had played a role in the crime.

The court heard she had several previous convictions for theft and had been on a suspended sentence, which was now activated.

"The only effective way to deal with a serial thief is to jail them, because otherwise there is no active way of stopping it," Judge McHugh said.
