Elton plans first birthday for son

Elton John and partner David Furnish are planning a family gathering to mark their son's first birthday -- but they will not be lavishing the youngster with gifts.

Furnish said they will instead focus on one "significant" present to mark the milestone for Zachary.

The youngster -- who was born by surrogate -- will turn one on Christmas Day.

Furnish said: "We're going to roll the two together and bring all the families together and have a wonderful celebration, so I'm so excited about that."

Bombs kill 21 Shiite pilgrims

The attacks yesterday revealed the huge security challenges that still beset Iraq.

Shiite religious holidays such as the mourning period known as Ashoura are targeted every year by Sunni extremists and have become especially difficult tests for the US-trained Iraqi security forces, still struggling to protect their citizens.

Biggest black holes found

Scientists have found the biggest black holes known to exist -- each one 10 billion times the size of our sun.

A team led by astronomers at the University of California, Berkeley, discovered the two gigantic black holes in clusters of elliptical galaxies more than 300 million light years away. That is relatively close on the galactic scale.

The previous black hole record was as large as six billion suns.
