Irish toddler dies after falling into swimming pool in Spain

An Irish toddler has drowned in a swimming pool on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

The two-year-old tot lost his balance and fell into a neighbour's pool in Mijas Costa after he went missing from his parents' home.

His parents - who are expats - asked a local gardener to call the police after he went missing early yesterday morning.

But moments later his father discovered his body floating in a neighbouring pool and frantically tried to rescue him.

Paramedics on the scene within 10 minutes spent more than 40 minutes trying to revive him.

His dad was treated at the scene for injuries he is thought to have sustained after jumping from his property on to his neighbour's.

Balance

It is thought the tragic accident occurred after the child lost his balance after climbing on to a wall separating his family home from the property next door which was empty at the time.

The child was discovered around 10.45am in a neighbourhood called El Coto in Mijas Costa near to Fuengirola.

The youngster's body was taken from the scene around 2pm yesterday afternoon and local Civil Guard officers have launched an investigation.

A source said: "Everything is pointing towards this being the result of a tragic accident.

"The boy was Irish but he was not on holiday. His parents live in Spain."
